Therapy with Latino Clients and Families

Friday, November 6, 2009  6:30PM - 8:00PM

"Therapy with Latino Clients and Families"

MILTON FUENTES, PSY.D.

Dr. Milton Fuentes  received his MA in Psychology with a concentration in Latino Mental Health from Montclair State University and his Psy.D in clinical psychology from the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University. He completed a pre-doctoral fellowship in clinical and community psychology at Yale University and directed a one-year epidemiological study at Columbia University. He is currently the Associate Professor of Psychology at Montclair State University, Co-Director of the Latin American and Latino Studies program and a licensed psychologist in New Jersey and New York.

He also oversees the Clinical and Community Studies laboratory in the Psychology Department. He is one of the founding members of the Latino Psychological Association of New Jersey. Dr. Fuentes’ interests are in the areas of Latino and multicultural psychology, child psychology and family psychology. He serves as a consultant to several schools and community-based programs, including the Puerto Rican Family Institute.

While the United States is home to approximately 45 million Latinos, the research consistently indicates that they tend to underutilize mental health services. Numerous reports suggest that the health care system in the United States is ill-equipped to adequately address the mental health needs of Latinos, preventing Latinos from successfully engaging in treatment. These findings signify the importance of training in Latino mental health. This workshop will introduce participants to models for assessing and treating Latino clients and families. Issues related to immigration, acculturation, and multiple identities will be explored.
