Description of the Program:
Sleep
problems are experienced by 20 to 25% of children of all
ages, and thus it is essential that pediatric
practitioners recognize and treat common sleep
problems. An overview of normal sleep patterns in
children and adolescents, and the consequences of
inadequate sleep for children will be provided. A
discussion of environmental and cultural differences in
sleep in children will be presented. In addition,
symptoms and treatment of common pediatric sleep
disorders will be reviewed, including bedtime problems
and night wakings. obstructive sleep apnea, and
parasomnias (sleepwalking, sleep terrors).
At the completion of this talk, participants will be able to:
1. Understand normal sleep patterns in children and adolescents 2. Describe the consequences of inadequate/disrupted sleep 3. Present information on environmental influences and cultural differences in sleep 4. Identify the symptoms and treatment of common pediatric sleep disorders
