Core Beliefs on Trial

Thursday, April 28, 2011: 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Irismar Reis de Oliveira, M.D., Ph.D.

Federal University of Bahia, Brazil

Professor of Psychiatry, University Hospital,

Department of Neurosciences and Mental Health

Description of the Program:

In Core Beliefs on Trial, Dr. Irismar Reis de Oliveira will present Trial Based-Cognitive Therapy (TBTC), a novel three-level, three-phase, case formulation approach, founded on Beck’s model of cognitive therapy. TBTC is a unique approach to conceptualization and techniques that make it a distinct intervention in modifying patients' core beliefs. Persistent attributions that are negative, global and personal regarding life events and adverse outcomes are risk factors for recurrence of most psychiatric disorders. TBCT may be more effective at changing belief systems than conventional thought records and logical disputation. One of its main techniques is the Trial-Based Thought Record (TBTR), a structured strategy that is presented as an analogy with Law, in which the therapist engages the client in a simulation of the judicial process. It is an empirically validated method of belief change, with preliminary, but promising, results.

Objectives: At the end of the lecture, participants are expected to be able to:

1) Explain the cognitive model to the patient according to Trial Based-Cognitive Therapy (TBTC) conceptualization diagram;

2) Describe the role of the Trial-Based Thought Record (TBTR) in changing patients’ core beliefs;

3) Describe the role of the Trial-Based Empty Chair (TBEC), an experiential technique that consolidates belief change put in motion by TBTR.
